How to check the validity of your ISO 9001 certificate

If by any chance, you are asking your vendors to have a QMS that is based on ISO QMS 9001 2015, you have your reasons to put forward. They can be services or processes resulting in a substandard output, or risk reduction etc. No matter what the reason of requesting might be, it is essential to check whether the certificate is authentic or not. Is there anything you can do, if this happens?

If this happens, here is what you can pursue:

Understand why it may have a false certificate

Might be surprising for you, but the concern regarding an invalid certification is not a part of the ISO 9001 standard. It only deals with a certain set of requirements for a better output for the business and customers.

But why may a company have an invalid certification? There can be many reasons, such as saving the cost of hiring a certification body, or being too anxious about what will be found during the audit etc.

How can you check if a certificate is invalid?

First and foremost, any organization cannot certify its own QMS. It needs to be done by an external, accredited certification body.

There should be a certification/registration number, the name of the certifying body and accreditation body on each certificate. If no accreditation or certification body is there, then the certificate is definitely invalid. If both the bodies are mentioned, then you can follow these steps to ensure that the certification body is properly accredited.

  1. Take a look at the list of all accreditations bodies on the IAF website.
  2. In the search bar under the accreditation board, look for the name of the certifying body on the certificate.
  3. If the accreditation body or certifying body is not found in the approved list, then there is trouble and vice versa.

For further knowledge and understanding, you can go through the contents of ISO 45001 training course.

What can you do about it?

Provided that your reason to request the certification was crucial to your business, it is quite obvious that if your vendor has an invalid certificate, your organization should quit business with it. You should definitely go for some other vendor who has an authentic certificate and fulfills your company needs in a better way. You can carry out internal research for a good supplier and confirm certification beforehand. It is always useful in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.
